HPTuners MPVI vs RTD vs COBB Accessport: Which GooseTuned Tuning Option Is Right for You?

MPVI4, RTD4, Accessport... if you've looked at our tuning kits and thought "which one do I actually need?", you're not alone. It's the #1 question that hits our inbox. Here's the short version: all three are just the tool that gets our custom GooseTuned calibration onto your truck. The tune is the same Goose-built, datalog-dialed calibration no matter which one you pick. What changes is the hardware in your hand, how you use it, and which vehicles each one supports.
The quick answer
HPTuners MPVI4: a plug-in OBD-II interface that works with your laptop or your phone. Most flexible HPTuners option. Licensed to your VIN with credits.
HPTuners RTD4: a simplified "Remote Tuning Device" built for customers of a pro tuner. Phone-only, simple, no laptop. Same credits, same tune, fewer buttons.
COBB Accessport: an all-in-one handheld with its own screen. Flash, gauges, datalogs, read codes and return to stock, no laptop or phone needed in the truck. Can move to another supported truck and holds its resale value.

First, how GooseTuned tunes your Ford
The device matters less than most people think. What you're really buying is the calibration and the guy behind it.
GooseTuned was founded in 2011 by Winfield Raglin III, aka "Goose," out of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Before tuning full time, Goose spent 17 years at NASA as a network and hardware engineer. That shows up in every file: if the data doesn't support a change, it doesn't happen. Since 2017 we've worked closely with COBB on Raptor development, and today we're a COBB Certified Protuner and Authorized Dealer who also tunes on HPTuners for platforms and setups where COBB doesn't have support yet. Read our full story.
No matter which device you choose, the process looks like this:
Order your kit and tell us your year, fuel and mods at checkout.
Load your first GooseTuned calibration. COBB kits ship with it preloaded on the Accessport. HPTuners kits start with reading your stock file and sending it to us.
Datalog. You make a few logged pulls and send them to Goose.
Revise. Goose sends back a revised file built from your truck's data: your altitude, your fuel, your mods.
Repeat until dialed. Most customers go through 4 to 7 revision cycles. That's a lot more back-and-forth than most tuners offer, and it's a big part of why the results are different.
Every tune is developed on our own fleet of 10+ Fords first. That's how we got the first Ford Raptor into the 11s (11.4 seconds) and the first stock-turbo 3.0L Explorer into the 10s (10.84). So whichever box you pick below, you're getting the same Goose calibration and the same support.
What is HPTuners?
HPTuners has been building tuning software and hardware since 2003 and supports thousands of vehicles across GM, Ford, Stellantis and more. Pro tuners use its VCM Suite software (VCM Editor to build tunes, VCM Scanner to log and diagnose). For you, HPTuners comes down to two pieces of hardware, the MPVI4 and the RTD4, plus credits.
HPTuners credits, explained
Credits are HPTuners' licensing currency. You spend them once to license your truck, and from then on you can flash revisions as many times as you need.
4 credits license the Ford vehicles we support. Every HPTuners kit that includes a device also includes the 4 credits.
The license is tied to your VIN, your ECU and the device. It lives on the device permanently. It can't be removed, moved or refunded.
Already own a device? Grab our HPTuners 4ea Universal Credits for MPVI and RTD and pick "Tuning Only" on your kit.
New truck later? You'll need new credits for the new VIN. The device itself carries over.

HPTuners MPVI4: the flexible one
MPVI is HPTuners' main vehicle interface (you'll often see it written out as "Multi-Purpose Vehicle Interface"). The MPVI4 launched in October 2025 and replaced the MPVI3. It's the same tool pro shops use, with a big hardware bump: a dual-core 1.7 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM (over 30x the MPVI3), 8 GB of storage, USB-C and Bluetooth 5.2, plus the Pro Feature Set and high-speed standalone logging out of the box.
How you use it with GooseTuned:
Plug it into your OBD-II port and connect with your laptop (VCM Suite) or your phone (HPTuners TDN app).
Read your stock file and send it to us. We send back your custom ECU and TCM tune.
Flash it, log it, send logs, repeat until it's dialed. We offer remote help getting set up.
Pick the MPVI4 if you like having options, want a laptop for deeper logging, or have other HPTuners-supported vehicles in the garage. It's a full-featured tool you'll keep using.
Good to know: the MPVI4 opens VCM Editor, where the tune files live. Your GooseTuned calibration is built for your exact truck, so leave the tables alone and send changes to Goose instead.
HPTuners RTD4: the simple one
RTD stands for Remote Tuning Device. HPTuners built it for one job: getting a professional tuner's file onto a customer's vehicle with as little hassle as possible. The RTD4 is the 4th generation, and it pairs with the free HPTuners TDN app (Tune Delivery Network) on iPhone or Android.
How you use it with GooseTuned:
Plug the RTD4 into your OBD-II port and pair it with the TDN app.
Read your stock file and send it to us right from the app.
We push your custom ECU and TCM tune back to your phone.
Flash it, datalog, send logs through the app and repeat until it's dialed.
No laptop, no software installs, no cables to your computer. It uses the same 4 credits and gets the same GooseTuned tune as the MPVI4.
What the RTD4 doesn't do: it can't open VCM Editor, so you can't view or edit the tune file. For most of our customers, that's a feature, not a bug. It's built for people who want the power, not a new hobby.
Pick the RTD4 if your phone is your computer, you want the simplest setup possible, and you're happy letting Goose handle the tuning.

MPVI4 vs RTD4 in one line
Same credits, same tune, same support. MPVI4 = laptop or phone, full tool. RTD4 = phone only, keep it simple.
COBB Accessport: the all-in-one handheld
COBB Tuning was founded in 1999 and launched the original Accessport in 2004 as the first handheld ECU programmer for Subaru. Today the Accessport V3 is one of the most popular handhelds for Ford EcoBoost trucks and SUVs, and it's where GooseTuned built its name on the Raptor. We're a COBB Certified Protuner and Authorized Dealer, with access to COBB's professional AccessTuner Pro software.
What the Accessport does on its own, no laptop or phone required:
Flash tunes for the ECU and, with the included COBB TCM, the transmission. Install takes "less than 10 button presses."
Live gauges on its full-color screen (up to six at once) and datalogging for your revisions.
Read and clear codes, plus 0-60, quarter-mile ET and trap speed.
Ford extras on supported trucks: tire size correction, Auto Start/Stop disable, Dynamic Pedal Control and Valet Mode.
Uninstall to put the truck back to the exact stock calibration (handy before a dealer visit).
How you use it with GooseTuned: your first custom GooseTuned map comes preloaded on the Accessport, ECU and TCM. Install, datalog, email us your logs, then load revisions with COBB's free Accessport Manager software. Our tuning instructions walk you through every step.
Married to one vehicle at a time. An Accessport "installs" to one ECU. Sell the truck? Uninstall first, and the Accessport can be sold or moved to another supported vehicle on the same platform. Forget, and COBB charges a relicensing fee. That transferability is a big reason Accessports hold resale value.
Pick the COBB Accessport if you want a dedicated screen in the cab, the easiest return-to-stock, or resale value.

Which one should I choose?
If your truck only shows one option above, you're done. That's your kit! If you have a choice, here's how we'd decide:
"I just want it to be easy." Get the RTD4. Phone app, a few taps, done.
"I want a screen in the cab, gauges and logs without my phone." Get the COBB Accessport.
"I'll probably sell the truck in a year or two." Get the COBB Accessport. Uninstall, and it goes back to stock with a device you can resell.
"I have a laptop, I like data, and I've got other cars to tune." Get the MPVI4.
"I have a Whipple on my Raptor R." HPTuners, MPVI4 or RTD4. Whipple tuning isn't available on COBB yet.
"I already own an MPVI or RTD4." Choose Tuning Only on your HPTuners kit and grab 4 credits if you don't have them.
Power-wise, it's a wash. The gains come from Goose's calibration, your fuel and your mods, not the logo on the device.
FAQ
What's the difference between HPTuners MPVI and RTD?
Both are HPTuners devices that flash your GooseTuned calibration using the same credits. The MPVI4 works with a laptop or phone and can open VCM Editor. The RTD4 (Remote Tuning Device) works only through the TDN phone app and can't view or edit the tune. Same tune either way.
Is the GooseTuned tune different on COBB vs HPTuners?
No. Goose builds a custom ECU and TCM calibration for your truck on whichever platform you choose, and both go through the same datalog and revision process. The device is just the delivery method.
What are HPTuners credits, and how many do I need?
Credits are how HPTuners licenses a vehicle. The Ford vehicles we support take 4 credits. They're included when you buy an HPTuners kit with a device. If you already own a device, buy 4 universal credits and choose "Tuning Only."
Can I move my HPTuners license to a new truck?
No. The license is permanently tied to that VIN and that device. Your MPVI4 or RTD4 can tune a new truck, but the new truck needs its own credits.
Can I move my COBB Accessport to a new truck?
Yes, if you uninstall it from the old truck first and the new truck is on the same platform. If you sell an Accessport without uninstalling, COBB charges a relicensing fee.
Do I need a laptop?
Not really. The MPVI4 works with a laptop or the TDN phone app, the RTD4 is phone-only, and the COBB Accessport flashes on its own. You'll use a computer with the Accessport only to load revision files.
Can I go back to stock?
Yes. On the Accessport, select Uninstall from the main menu. On HPTuners, flash the stock file you read at the start. Keep that file safe!
Will tuning void my warranty?
A tune doesn't automatically void your whole warranty, but a dealer can deny a claim on parts they believe the tune affected. Return to stock before dealer visits.
I already own an MPVI3. Can I use it?
Our Tuning Only kits are built around the MPVI4 and RTD4. Email Sales@goosetuned.com before ordering and we'll confirm whether your device works for your truck.
If I sell my truck, does the tune transfer to the next owner?
The tune on the truck stays until it's returned to stock, but GooseTuned support doesn't transfer. Second owners need to purchase their own tune.
How fast will I get my tune?
Usually within 1-2 hours, and up to 24-48 hours on busy days and weekends.
